Touching the Void

Tom Morris (War Horse) has chosen the incredible story of climbers Joe Simpson & Simon Yates as his newest production, at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

Touching the Void is based on the best-selling memoir and the adapted BAFTA winning film by Joe Simpson. Over the two hours on stage, the story unfolds of the mental battle faced by Simpson when a climbing trip in the Andes goes horribly wrong. The 1985 trip saw Simpson with a broken leg, with no supplies, in sub zero temperatures, unable to climb out from a crevasse.

Throughout the drama, Simpson lingers between life and death. The production excels with its highly intelligent staging, and the relationship between cast members which never exceeds 4. Perhaps strongest was the interplay between the characters of Simpsons and Yates, kindred spirits that sought to make history and found themselves having to make a perilous decision that would change their lives forever.

Tickets from £15. From now to 29 February 2020 at the Duke of York’s Theatre
