SPOTLIGHT: Mr Sam Way
Photography - Nicholas Andrews
Interview - Taj Hayer
In this multi job world, we have become quite used to seeing male models move from their position in front of the camera to other arenas – fitness and personal training (Roger Frampton), design and collaboration collections (David Gandy) and even literature (Bruce Hulse). Whilst music and menswear go hand in hand, models that have successfully made the transition to the microphone have been few and far between. Sam Way is one model that has made waves in his second career as a credible musician.
You will recognize the handsome British model from his work with global fashion brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Diesel and Chanel. From catwalk shows, underwear editorial shoots and risqué video campaigns, there is not much that Sam has not been part of. In November 2015, he released Architect, his first full EP.
A bold step forward from his 2013 debut “Dancing Shoes” the EP is a mature and confident offering. The first release “Stargazer” is a gorgeous and dramatic tune, with the evident emotion heightened by an orchestra. With a deep voice that can command a room, the record shows real promise and we have no doubt that he has the skills that are necessary to become a force to be reckoned with on the British music scene. The track is supported by a Bond-esque cinematic video shot by Director of Photography Max Larrson.
We sat down for a brief chat with Sam to find out more about the fashion industry, his aspirations in the music world and the best pub in London.
How does walking a catwalk compare with performing live?
A catwalk is fairly simple, you feel good, and you are with you mates and its exciting and fast. Being up on stage performing, you have to carry the show, you're all the audience has to interact with. You are not part of a machine, you're the magic. However after both there is a sense of elation, satisfaction, and probably a drink too.
You have already shown yourself to be talented in multiple ways. Are there any other tricks up your sleeve that we don't know about?
Maybe, but that would be giving too much away, right?
How does Architect move your music forward from your earlier offerings?
What came before was fun, playful and that’s a massive part of me, but Architect is reflective, emotional and rich in storytelling. There’s so much more in these songs to get your teeth into, to get your head around and to move your heart.
How difficult it is to juggle what is essentially, two completely different careers?
It's challenging, there are pro's and there are cons. If time is the most valuable thing we have, we need to remember that one day our time will be up, and if we're not doing what we're supposed to be doing then it’s a great shame, and possibly a waste too. But right now, I think I'm supposed to be doing exactly what I'm doing, so I embrace the challenge/the highs/and the lows of trying to do it all.
What influences and inspires you?
People, relationships, long walks, words. I'd say there are a few people who are massive influences, but musical influence comes from far and wide. Right now I really love Alina Baraz.
For those that have not heard the record, what can they expect?
The Architect EP should take you on a journey. It ebbs and it flows, rises in love and falls in it too. Sometimes it’s kind of fragile and if you listen to it with headphones on the train you’ll feel like you’re in a film. But at times it feels nothing less than epic. Strings feature heavily, as does award winning composer Edward Abela, and the London Contemporary Voices Choir. It’s been a year in the making. Listen on a Sunday morning, in the bath, or on a winter commute.
Do you have a typical fan profile?
(I have to smile) Yes, Turkish, but that’s another story.
How much of your music is collaborative?
It's a totally collaborative experience, on stage, in production and outside of that too. For me that where much of the joy can be found. I think working with all the amazing artists and producers on the EP has been the highlight for me.
What's next for Sam Way?
More music, I've been back in the Studio already and working on the next set of songs, the festival circuit, some guitar lessons - after 4 years of playing by ear so to speak I've still never actually had one - a holiday with my mum, and lots more exciting collaborations. I feel that music and fashion are beginning to move together in a way we're not seen before, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they yoke together this year.
