Ermenegildo Zegna Couture SS19
Words by Elliot Whitelaw
Ermenegildo Zegna took to the runway at Milan fashion week on the 15 June 2018 to showcase the upcoming range for Spring/Summer 2019 with the show taking place on a beautiful summer evening at Palazzo Mondadori, a stunning modern building designed to serve as a headquarters for Brazilian architect Oscar Niemayer. As we would expect from Zegna, the collection combined the simplicity of everyday life alongside technical and somewhat performance based clothing In a fashion climate dominated by streetwear and sportswear, it is certainly refreshing to see Ermenegildo Zegna create a collection of items that feature a broad variety of clothing and a different perspective towards streetwear in general.
The upcoming range features silhouettes that are functional, simple and easy to wear. The signature XXX symbol, synonymous with the brand is cleverly placed throughout the different pieces, ranging from embossments on T-shirts, to subtle stitching and fabric on shirts and jackets. Many of the pieces in the collection boast versatility because of how simple they are, allowing you to construct simple, stylish and comfortable outfits from one or two key pieces. A number of pieces were reminiscent of Massimo Osti’s work with Stone Island and CP Company, and even MA Strum; all of which are synonymous for creating fashionable and functional menswear.
For spring, Zegna has created a collection that has an item for every occasion, whether that be a formal event, a casual day out or even a lazy day at home, this collection certainly has you covered. Not only does this collection boast a variety of outfits for different occasions, it also boasts a variety of colours – neutral greys, black, white to bright yellows, pinks and blues. All essential in a modern wardrobe.
Footwear was a real highlight with newly created silhouettes that are parable with different types of bottoms, whether they are formal trousers, jogging bottoms or even shorts. In this current fashion climate, it’s difficult to create a silhouette that isn’t comparable to a previous shoe, which would explain the success of ranges such as Yeezy by Kanye West. Zegna’s model has an upper that is slightly reminiscent of an Air Max 98, a timeless model that sits well with several different cuts of trousers but the sole is what gives this shoe it’s own identity, alongside the panelling on the upper and the unusually long pull- tab on the heel. This silhouette boasts a successful combination of colours in black and yellow, and looks to be a comfortable, durable and trendy every-day shoe with a runner/slip on aesthetic.
Last but certainly not least are the accessories. As previously mentioned, Zegna has imprinted the XXX in different ways, but they are most notable on the accessories, such as the tote bags and the backpacks. Accessories are always a key part of any outfit, and the better they look whilst serving their purpose, the better. The sleek, stylish backpacks and tote bags offer simplicity and effectiveness whilst you store everything you need inside these minimalist bags.
